These days, the value of a firm doesn't have much to do with physical assets but with intangible assets like brand, customer relationships and capabilities. We can lock up our offices, but how do we protect our intangibles?

When you look up "protecting intellectual capital" on the Internet, you find a raft of articles about legal protections: patents, non-disclosure agreements and non-compete contracts. It's sensible to use these tools, but is it sensible to rely on them? If your competitive advantage lies in superior manufacturing skills, can you really prevent your employees from ending up at competitors and bringing a lot of know-how with them?

Women Don't Ask Linda Babcock and Sara Lascheber publish Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide

WITI congratulates Linda Babcock and Sara Lascheber on the publication of their book, Women Don't Ask : Negotiation and the Gender Divide!

Linda Babcock, an economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, found only 7% of graduating women (versus 57% of graduating men) negotiated starting salaries, causing a $4000 gap per year in pay. Over time, women who consistently negotiated their salary increases earned at least $1 million more during their careers than women who didn't. Women Don't Ask : Negotiation and the Gender Divide, which Ms. Babcock co-wrote with Sara Lascheber, not only details the results of Ms. Babcock's research but provides insight and suggestions on how women can become stronger negotiators and ask for what they want.

Teresa Heinz has said, "This book is an eye opener, a call to arms, and a plan for action; it is enlightening, unsettling, and, ultimately, inspiring... Gracefully and with humor, Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever tell a riveting story about an invisible problem that's been hiding in plain sight: one major reason that women still work for less money and advance less far and less fast than men is that women themselves have accepted the status quo and refrained from asking for more than they're offered and for less than they need or deserve."
